Program Overview

Residents who chose obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) for their specialty know that a woman’s good health is a complex equation. From the onset of adolescence through the transformation brought by childbirth to hitting the stride of maturity through the late years of life, the female form is continually developing. The complex issues of female health lead to rewarding challenges and new developments in medicine.

Providing the whole picture of health for women of all ages is a vital part of the health care goals of JPS Health Network. Patient care is our number one priority and the driving force behind our mission to transform healthcare delivery for the communities we serve. To that end, the educational mission of the OB/GYN program is paramount-to educate residents so they are not only excellent practitioners of obstetrics and gynecology, but also superior candidates should they pursue a career in the subspecialties of reproductive endocrinology (REI), maternal-fetal medicine (MFM), gynecologic oncology (GynOnc) or urogynecology (Urogyn).

In support of that goal, our residents experience a team concept that not only provides for educational access and practical experience, it provides a reservoir of on-site knowledge and information from which to draw. Teams consist of OB/GYN faculty, OB/GYN 2nd and 4th year residents, 2nd and 3rd year family medicine residents, family medicine or obstetrics interns, nurse practitioners and medical students. This team effort sets us apart in preparing OB/GYN physicians to provide first-class patient care.

In addition, our residents will have direct access to OB/GYN subspecialties including REI, MFM, GynOnc and Urogyn. They will also benefit from the community of caring the network provides through school-based health centers and community-based health centers, including three dedicated health centers for women.

In short, JPS offers private and county hospital exposure at every care level in a system that has more than 6,000 births each year. And, as JPS is the public hospital system for Tarrant County, residents will see and treat a wide array of pathologies. Our services, our setting and our mission are putting all the pieces of the woman’s health picture together. We provide graduate medical education that frames obstetric and gynecologic medicine together in one location.

BREADTH AND SCOPE

Learning is a combination of knowledge and experience. Our educational mission is to provide OB/GYN residents with a breath of knowledge and hands-on training in not only their specialty, but in a variety of subspecialties that provide them opportunities to excel within the obstetrics and gynecology field.

The OB/GYN curriculum covers all of broad primary care in addition to experience in REI, MFM, GynOnc, and Urogyn. The program provides residents a scope of experience that will benefit all the stages of a woman’s health care needs.

UNIQUE ASPECTS OF THE PROGRAM

A key element setting JPS apart from many other OB/GYN programs is its team concepts. This approach to patient care involves a close working relationship between faculty, residents and nurse practitioners. Residency core teams consist of:

  • 2 General Ob/Gyn Faculty
  • 2 Ob/Gyn Residents – 2nd yr level & 4th yr level
  • 1 Family Practice Fellow
  • 1 FP Intern/Resident or OB Intern
  • Medical Students

The residency teams have the following structure:

  • 12-hour work days on average
  • Fourth year residents work with faculty to manage labor and delivery (L&D), surgery (OR) and clinics for their team
  • Direct faculty supervision of individual teams
  • Family medicine, obstetric interns and residents work together on individual teams
  • Three weeks of day shift and one week of night shift
    • Two days per week in L&D
    • One OR day per week, three weeks per month
    • Two clinic days per week
    • One colposcopy clinic day per month with pathology conference
  • Scheduled time off with your team
    • Two weekends off per month for second and fourth year residents
  • Two faculty members per team directly responsible for two residents – to provide excellent communication with faculty and a small resident-to-faculty ratio
  • Direct one-on-one operating time with generalist and subspecialty faculty

ROBTIC SURGERY

Beginning with the intern year, robotic surgery training for our residents involves a unique curriculum that allows them to use the daVinci robotic surgery system. With enhanced optics and dexterity, the robotic system allows surgeons to address more complex cases through a laparoscopic approach, thus improving post operative pain control and shortening recovery time.

  • 1 Gynecologic Oncologist
  • 1 Reproductive Endocrinologist
  • 4 Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists
  • 1 Urogynecologist
  • 1 Internal-Medicine Specialists
  • 10 Nurse Midwifes
  • 16 Residents
  • 16 Nurse Practitioners
